Meat-eating brings various kinds of incurable diseases of liver and kidneys. Various kinds of worms of the bowels, such as tapeworm, develop in the bowels. O cruel man! Give up killing of these innocent animals. Those who take away the lives of these poor dumb creatures will have to pay a heavy penalty on the day of judgement. Action and reaction are equal and opposite. Develop mercy. Visit a butcher’s shop and see how these animals undergo sufferings when their heads are being cut off. Then you will give up meat-eating. You will find better nutrition in butter, pulses, peas, beans, curd, milk and fruits. You will have a good sharp intellect, by taking vegetable food. HENCE BECOME A PURE VEGETARIAN. Anger begets eight kinds of vices: injustice, rashness, persecution, jealousy, taking possession of others’ property, killing, harsh words and cruelty. When a man’s desire is not gratified and when one stands in the way of its fulfillment, the man becomes angry. The desire gets transmuted into anger. When one is under the sway of anger, he will commit all sorts of sinful deeds. He loses his memory; his understanding becomes clouded; and his intellect gets perverted. (Swami Sivananda)

Once a disciple said to Swami Sivananda ji, “Well Swamiji, I quite realize that contentment gives peace. But, I have a doubt. If I become contented, all my ambitions will die. I will become lethargic and lazy. On account of my various sorts of ambitions, I move about hither and thither; I exert and am energetic. Kindly remove this doubt of mine. I am quite bewildered.”
Swami ji simply replied, “Contentment can never make you idle. It is a sattvic virtue that propels man towards God, gives strength of mind and peace, checks unnecessary and selfish exertions, opens the inner eye of man and moves his mind towards divine contemplation. It transmutes the gross energy, viz., greed, that is forcing man towards selfish exertions, into spiritual energy. That man who is contented is full of Sattwa. He is more energetic now, turns out more work calmly with one-pointed mind. He is always peaceful. All the dissipated rays of the mind are collected now.”
